Auckland United FC Premier Men’s Coach José Figueira presents 5 Tips on creating a high performance culture at any sports club

1. Belonging

Having a sense of belonging within your sports club is a powerful tool for bringing everyone together to work towards a common goal. Whether that be on the pitch, off the pitch, players, staff, club members, volunteers or supporters, if everyone feels like they belong and are valued you can nurture a deep sense of cooperation and trust within the organisation.

2. Vision

Staying on track during the many ups and downs of the season is always a challenge within any sports club. Setting a Vision for those around you (and your sports club) can provide you a compass to navigate forward together. As a Head Coach (or leader) within your sports club, having a clear vision you can share with clarity and passion will give you a strong foundation and connection.

3. Values

Sports clubs are diverse organisations. Normally the centre of the local community, people from many different backgrounds and ethnicities come together to be part of something they can all connect with. Understanding your values and the values of those working around/with you is crucial to establishing a place of trust and safety, where people can be themselves. Everybody has their own unique stories and backgrounds and tapping into these and understanding who they are will enrich your sports club’s experience.

4. Purpose

Purpose is the fuel that drives you. Having a reason and drive behind the work you and your organisation does means you are not just focused on the results, but instead focused on the process for long term sustainability and growth.

5. Environment

With each of these pillars in place your sports club’s environment should now be inclusive, welcoming, with room for growth and a place where people can be themselves. With the optimal working environment set it is crucial that coaches and leaders are constantly in touch with it and its conditions.
